The Six Days of Shawwal
Ramadan is over. Eid has come. A time of celebration is among us. Family gatherings have winded down, masjids are becoming empty and life is slowly turning back to its normal rhythm, however before Ramadan fades away. We are blessed with a gift — Six days of fasting in Shawwal that carries an extraordinary reward.
The Hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said :
"Whoever fasts Ramadan and follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he fasted the entire year." — Sahih Muslim
It is authenticated, widely accepted by scholars, and acted upon by Muslims across the world for over 1,400 years.
Why does it equal a full year?
This is the question everyone asks and the answer is simple. Allahs generosity. Allah multiplies every good deed by at least ten
Ramadan is 29 or 30 days. If you multiply them by ten, that equals approximately 300 days of reward. The six days of Shawwal, multiplied by ten, equal 60 days. Combined, that gives you 360 days essentially an entire year of fasting, completed in just over a month.
What do Scholars think?
The majority of Islamic scholars including Imam al-Nawawi, Ibn Qudamah, and Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali confirmed the authenticity and strong recommendation of fasting the six days of Shawwal. Imam al-Nawawi said that this hadith is proof for the recommendation of fasting six days of Shawwal and that the Muslim scholarly community has acted upon it across generations. There is a minority opinion among some early scholars who were cautious about it, but majority of Scholars agree that fasting the six days of Shawwal is extremely beneficial and rewarding.
The Wisdom behind the timing…
Shawwal comes right after Ramadan for a reason. While Ramadan trains you, Shawwal comes around to see if the training stuck. Effort should not be disregarded after Ramadan.
The six days of Shawwal are not a burden placed on you after an already demanding month. They are an invitation. An open door that says, the effort you built up does not have to stop here. You do not have to wait until next Ramadan to be the version of yourself you were for thirty days. You can keep going. You can let Ramadan be the beginning of something rather than the peak of it.
The Connection to our Theme
At MIST 2026 we are exploring Currents of Consequence, the might of small deeds. The six days of Shawwal are one of the most perfect examples of this principle in action. Six days. That is a small number. But paired with sincerity, consistency, and the mercy of Allah's multiplication, those six days become a year. A small deed, done with full intention, becomes something the world cannot measure. That is the current. That is the consequence.
